Don't Take Shortcuts!
Not all electricians are created equal! The blue recessed device box pictured not only houses the switch and receptacle shown; but also is home for additional splices. Unfortunately the installer of this box was either poorly trained and unaware of the NEC code or simply lazy and too cheap to purchase the proper product. While illegal, there are 2 separate breakers and mixed wiring methods serving this juncture and the box is too deep into the wall cavity to prevent potential problems. An extension ring is needed here to suffice code or simply an adjustable box placed prior to finishing products. When everything is buttoned up you can’t see any issues here and frankly most homeowners don’t know the difference. Don’t cheat yourself, call a professional and make sure the unseen is done correctly too!
